Sombarey (W) June 5: The World Environment Day was observed at Govt. Senior Secondary School, Sombarey, West Sikkim under the leadership of the Principal, Mrs. M. Subba. All teaching and non-teaching staff along with 600 students inclusive of the NSS Officer and Student Volunteers made their wholehearted participation in the programme.
The programme commenced with the inauguration of the newly built Herbal Garden in the school premises by the Principal and the senior most teachers who showed their concern towards the environment by planting each sapling in front of the garden. The garden was an output of a seer hard work of some of Science and Arts Faculty members along with the students of class X and XII for three days. The garden was fraught with some locally available herbs like Pakhanved (Bergenia ciliate), Betlauri, Budookhati (Astiiberi vularis), Tulsi, Phachhyang, Kadam etc.
The programme was followed by a peace rally of all staff and students which reached upto B.A.C. gate and turned round to Sombarey P.H.C. where cleanliness of the hospital premises by weeding and earthing up of the old saplings and plantation of around 400 saplings belonging to ornamental plants were carried out.
The main slogan of the day was “many species, one planet, one future ” the theme of the year 2010 and the broader objective of the programme was to sensitize the local people on the importance and relationship of each tree in human life, role of a tree in purification of the environment and maintaining a fine balance in the eco-system.
The programme ended with the return of the rally to the school where all the participants were served with soft drink and snacks at around 1:00 pm.
